Arkansas has Hired John L. Smith

John L. Smith is the new Arkansas head coach

The AP reports that Arkansas Razorbacks athletic director Jeff Long has hired John L. Smith as the head coach for the coming season.

That’s right, it appears that this contract is for just the coming season according to @footballscoop:

Am told by sources close to the program that Smith’s contract is for less than one year. Wow

If you don’t remember who John L. Smith is, he is the former head coach at Louisville and Michigan State. He is most famous for this half time rant in a game against Ohio State. If you haven’t seen the video before, well, it speaks for itself.

Personally I think the worst John L. Smith moment wasn’t actually the rant, but when he informed his Louisville players during halftime of their bowl game that he was leaving for the Michigan State job. Seriously, what kind of person does that?

Probably a person who would leave Weber State after just 3 1/2 months for what is basically a part-time job at Arkansas.

This will certainly be a very scrutinized hire and is one that could really backfire on Jeff Long, ultimately costing him his own job.
