Yesterday, Jim L Mora, head coach of UCLA, decided to take a jab at USC. He said:
When you’re talking about UCLA, it’s one of the great schools in the world — not just America, but in the world. It’s a safe, beautiful campus in a great area of town. I mean, we don’t have murders one block off our campus.
Now, this comment was in obvious reference to two USC students who were murdered just one block from campus this past spring.
However, Mora spent the better part of yesterday trying to deny that his comments had anything to do with the USC situation and were just a general remark.
I didn’t say anything about anyone else’s campus. I just said it about our campus. I didn’t mention another campus. We don’t have anybody getting murdered a block off of our campus.
If anybody, whether USC or Cal State San Bernardino, is offended by the statement, then that’s their insecurity, not mine.
After that strategy failed, he came out with a stronger appology in this video:
While Lane Kiffin gave a short, general answer:
I don’t really think that’s something to joke about. That’s all I got to say about that.
Needless to say, USC fans were not happy and here was one fan’s response:
Hopefully this entire thing settles down and Mora realized what a jerk he was. Sadly, I have yet to see an official response from UCLA, who should have been all over this from the beginning.
