New Michigan football t-shirt

Michigan unveiled a new football t-shirt for sale today that has a list of the program’s accomplishments heading into its 133rd season. Kind of reads like an old No Fear t-shirt from back in the day.

Former Purdue running back Reggie Pegram is headed to North Texas and may be eligible this season.

Pete Sonski (@29Sonski) provided this link with a short video of the USF athletic director Doug Woolard stating that an on-campus football stadium is in the long-term plans for the school.

Former Nebraska players Eric Crouch and Tommy Frazier handled their College Football Hall of Fame snubs with class. Makes he hope even more that Frazier finally gets in next year.

Aaron Torres (@Aaron_Torres) argues that USC’s athletic director Pat Haden is the best in the business.

While on the subject of USC, Heisman Pundit Chris Huston (@HeismanPundit) has an interesting take on how the sanctions actually helped USC become a top program again.

According to @SUonRivals, wide receiver Quinta Funderburk will transfer from Arkansas to Syracuse.

TCU has sold of of season football tickets for the first time in years. Just two years ago, they only sold 19,143 season tickets, than 22,500 last year and finally 30,000 this year. Amazing what a renovated stadium and a move to the Big XII has been worth to them already.

Notre Dame linebacker Carlo Calabrese couldn’t keep his mouth shut while Tommy Rees was being arrested a few weeks ago. Now he has been charged with intimidation of a police officer.

Mascot Version Wins Cy-Hawk Trophy Voting

Last year, a trophy was introduced in the Iowa/Iowa State football series. If you remember, it was a terrible trophy that was widely panned across the internet.

The CyHawk trophy

Thankfully, unlike the Big Ten with their division names, the teams agreed to design a new trophy with fan input. The result was a vote on three finalist designs, which was won handily by the “mascot concept.”

Here was the final vote tally:

Mascot concept: 8,253

Corn Football concept: 1,471

Corn Stalk concept: 852

If you want to know the reasoning behind each portion of the winning design, here is a detailed explanation.

MAC and Sun Belt Conferences Re-up with GoDaddy.com Bowl

Not too much to add here. The MAC and Sun Belt have both agreed to continue playing in the GoDaddy.com bowl in Mobile, Alabama through at least 2017. There is also a new internship opportunity for one MAC school student who wants to work in city government.

Here is the full press release:

For Immediate Release– The Mid-American Conference announced today a new four-year contract extension with long-time Mobile, Alabama bowl partner, the GoDaddy.com Bowl, through the 2017 football season.

“We are extremely happy to extend our long-established and successful bowl partnership with the GoDaddy.com Bowl and the city of Mobile,” said Dr. Jon Steinbrecher, MAC Commissioner.  “Our membership, most importantly our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans, continually enjoy an outstanding experience with the bowl festivities and the hospitality provided by the GoDaddy.com Bowl, President Jerry Silverstein and the entire city of Mobile.”

A bowl partner with the MAC since 2001, the Mobile-based bowl was originally named the GMAC Bowl for nine years (2001-2009) before current bowl sponsor GoDaddy.com joined for the 2010 football season.  GoDaddy.com has been bowl sponsor for the last two years (2010-11).

“Our relationships with both conferences continue to grow and mature and we are pleased to have them continue to be a part of our game. The MAC has been associated with our game for 12 years and the Sun Belt for three years. We have had many memorable games as evidenced by the TV ratings, our title sponsorship and games that have become instant classics on ESPN,” said Jerry Silverstein, GoDaddy.com Bowl President.

“This game produced the 10th most memorable game in college football history. Fans, student athletes, alumni, and coaches continue to rave about their experience in Mobile. The city continues to support all of the events leading up to the game itself. Without the great support we receive from of the City of Mobile, the County, our title sponsor, GoDaddy.com and these two conferences, hosting these events would not be possible.”

New to the partnership between the MAC and the GoDaddy.com Bowl will be an internship for the city of Mobile.  This opportunity will be provided for one student from the MAC who has a career interest in city government or urban development to work with the city of Mobile beginning in 2013.

The MAC has an 8-3 record in 11 bowl games in Mobile, Ala.  Last year, Northern Illinois defeated Arkansas State, 38-20 on Jan. 8, 2012, to win the GoDaddy.com Bowl.

Oregon cheerleaders taking a break

UCLA had to stop practice yesterday due to a fight.

Marshall running back Martin Ward may have had another legal run-in before the brawl with police a few days ago.

Baylor defensive end Tevin Elliott has been suspended for a violation of team rules.

Conference expansion and movement continues to dominate. Here is a good example of a vague statement by Texas State athletic director Dr. Larry Teis and their future plans.
