Mascot Version Wins Cy-Hawk Trophy Voting

Last year, a trophy was introduced in the Iowa/Iowa State football series. If you remember, it was a terrible trophy that was widely panned across the internet.

The CyHawk trophy

Thankfully, unlike the Big Ten with their division names, the teams agreed to design a new trophy with fan input. The result was a vote on three finalist designs, which was won handily by the “mascot concept.”

Here was the final vote tally:

Mascot concept: 8,253

Corn Football concept: 1,471

Corn Stalk concept: 852

If you want to know the reasoning behind each portion of the winning design, here is a detailed explanation.

Daily Huddle 4-21-12

A collection of college football photos, stories and links from around the web.

Two photos today, both of t-shirts

The first, is a #FAIL on a Texas A&M t-shirt that didn’t show the right states in the SEC.

This Texas A&M t-shirt has the wrong states in the SEC

Good news for Texas A&M is that the t-shirt is being recalled and should not make it to market.

Here, Arkansas shows how much integrity athletic director Jeff Long has with this free t-shirt they gave away at the Union last weekend for the spring game.

Arkansas brags about their integrity

Georgia State has dismissed quarterback Bo Schlecter and suspended linebacker Dexter Moody and kicker Christian Benvenuto for their roles in a bar fight.

The ACC, about a year too late, has issued an official letter of reprimand to UNC for their scandal.

The NCAA has denied a wavier request by Kansas wide receiver Justin McCay. McCay must now sit out the 2012 season after transferring from Oklahoma.

Next Two Days

I have a lot to get caught up on over the next few days since I worked 32 days in a row before today, which I will try to do between enjoying games. I will be covering the Iowa State at Connecticut game tonight and then the Duke at Boston College game tomorrow morning. In the afternoon, I am debating whether to go to Fenway park for the Rays at Red Sox game or making the drive to UMass for their football game against Rhode Island.

I have a press credential for both games so it will be my first chance to do game stories at the stadium. I will be sure to attend the post-game press conferences and see what I can learn. It will certainly be a new experience for me and I hope it turns out well.

I will also be meeting up with Aaron Torres from Aaron Torres Sports and Crystal Ball Run this afternoon. Sad that my #FireCraigJames bracelets didn’t come in yet to take him one.

Today’s Best

Today’s picture is of the all-black uniform that Texas Tech will wear this season.

Today’s Best is going to be real short because the first article is so good.

If you only read one of these links all week, maybe even all month, it needs to be this article from Kristi Dosh on why the Perryman article about the economic impact on the state of Texas if Texas A&M moves to the SEC is nothing but a scare tactic.

Then again, if you want to read more, try the following:

You can debate Lane Kiffin, who I refer to as the “worst coach in FBS” with the guys at Crystal Ball Run.

Matthew Elder has the opposite opinion of me on the Roger Goodell ruling on Terrell Pryor and I think it is always worth reading the opposing sides point of view. Don’t worry, I still believe Goodell was 100% correct in what he did.

A link via Brian Grummell again with more about how bad the USC ruling by Paul Dee and company was. In fact, the ruling was so bad that USC and AD Pat Haden are still considering suing the NCAA.

An idea for commissioners for NCAA sports.

Finally, I leave you with what I thought was a joke of a picture, the Cy-Hawk trophy which will be awarded to the winner of the Iowa State-Iowa football game each year. Yikes!
