The hot topic of the day was how relegation would work in the NCAA with football. Not sure it fits the American sports culture, but here is the post by Bill Connelly (@SBN_BillC).

SMU has fired their athletic director, Steve Orsini, immediately and right now no one knows why.

Remember the Alabama fan who thought it would be funny to stick his junk in the face of a passed out LSU fan in New Orleans, then post the video on youtube? Well, now he is facing felony charges for sexual battery.

Clemson running back Mike Bellamy has been ruled academically ineligible.

Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione was very open in this interview about his views on a playoff and how to preserve the regular season.

Robert Steeples has decided that he will play at Memphis after leaving Missouri last month.

The Notre Dame football team appears to have a drinking problem as wide receiver DeVaris Daniels was cited for consumption of alcohol as a minor.

Good news for Pitt as it appears that Ray Graham will be ready for fall camp. The injury happened right in front of me and it was non-contact and nasty looking. I’m happy to see Graham be on a fast recovery schedule.

USC linebacker Simione Vehikite has been ordered to spend a year in jail.

Michigan is going to get new uniforms again for 2012. I’ll reserve judgement till some pictures leak.

Arkansas is also getting new uniforms with gradient numbers. People always have to mess with good things and make them ugly.

New Michigan football t-shirt

Michigan unveiled a new football t-shirt for sale today that has a list of the program’s accomplishments heading into its 133rd season. Kind of reads like an old No Fear t-shirt from back in the day.

Former Purdue running back Reggie Pegram is headed to North Texas and may be eligible this season.

Pete Sonski (@29Sonski) provided this link with a short video of the USF athletic director Doug Woolard stating that an on-campus football stadium is in the long-term plans for the school.

Former Nebraska players Eric Crouch and Tommy Frazier handled their College Football Hall of Fame snubs with class. Makes he hope even more that Frazier finally gets in next year.

Aaron Torres (@Aaron_Torres) argues that USC’s athletic director Pat Haden is the best in the business.

While on the subject of USC, Heisman Pundit Chris Huston (@HeismanPundit) has an interesting take on how the sanctions actually helped USC become a top program again.

According to @SUonRivals, wide receiver Quinta Funderburk will transfer from Arkansas to Syracuse.

TCU has sold of of season football tickets for the first time in years. Just two years ago, they only sold 19,143 season tickets, than 22,500 last year and finally 30,000 this year. Amazing what a renovated stadium and a move to the Big XII has been worth to them already.

Notre Dame linebacker Carlo Calabrese couldn’t keep his mouth shut while Tommy Rees was being arrested a few weeks ago. Now he has been charged with intimidation of a police officer.

Hey Georgia, it's proceed

Probably a kettle/pot thing here with they way I spell, but hey it’s all in good fun.

The Knight commission would like Bowl payouts to be linked to graduation rate. Good luck with that, and that’s from someone who would love it.

John Walters (@jdubs88) picked up on a great quote from PAC12 commissioner Larry Scott and gives us this story.

@BTNDienhart reports that Iowa Board of Regents has approved plans for the second and final phase of the football facilities plan.

The NCAA has pushed back the date on a new, more stringent, academic standards so they would not go into effect until 2016. I’m sure they will get changed four more times before then anyways so I don’t see the point, but whatever keeps people employed.

Andy Staples is celebrating the new college football playoff. I imagine with some burnt ends and sweet tea.

Remember that Colorado State trio of players who beat the snot out of some other folks, well they have been formally charged with some fairly minor stuff.

South Carolina got off easy from the NCAA from these allegations by basically having the NCAA accept their self-imposed penalties and just adding a few more scholarship reductions.

Sean Adams (@thatsean) wrote this great column for ESPN on the Texas/Texas A&M rivalry ending.

Colorado wants you to be aware of compliance rules, even when using the restroom

Colorado cares very deeply about compliance.

Michigan has stiffened their drug policy after the Oregon pot story from yesterday.

Michigan is also too poor to take their band to Cowboy’s Stadium when they play Alabama on opening weekend. To me, this is disgusting as a live band makes the feel of college football.

The Paterno family and Penn State continue to fight, but the University has recently paid out over $5.75 million to the family.

Georgia Tech will be without linebacker Daniel Drummond for at least one game after he was arrested for boating while under the influence.

Michigan Adds Twitter Hashtag to Field for Spring Game

Michigan is adding a #GoBlue hashtag to their field for the spring game

Michigan announced today that they will be adding a #GoBlue hashtag to the Michigan Stadium field for the spring game. The hashtag will appear in two places, straddling the 25-yard line on each side of the field.

Fans will be encouraged to tweet, using the hashtag to win prizes throughout both the spring game, and the Ohio State versus Michigan Men’s Lacrosse game that is set to begin immediately after the football scrimmage.

Here is the full press release:

The University of Michigan Athletic Department will paint the FieldTurf at Michigan Stadium with the hashtag #GOBLUE for the upcoming Mott Spring Game presented by PNC Bank. The Wolverines will use the opportunity to generate exposure inside the stadium, on the nationally televised broadcast, and most importantly in the social media world.

The annual spring football scrimmage and the “Battle at the Big House” men’s lacrosse game against Ohio State will be held Saturday (April 14) at Michigan Stadium. The Victors Classic alumni flag football game will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the annual spring football scrimmage at noon. The lacrosse game is tentatively slated to start at 2:30 p.m.

The hashtag #GOBLUE will be painted maize at two locations, straddling the 25-yard line on the northeast and southwest sides of the field.

“Our goal is to challenge the status quo and to create innovative ideas that speak to our fans,” said Jordan Maleh, U-M’s director of digital marketing. “This initiative will help our athletic department use technology as a competitive advantage to engage and connect to fans, build brand loyalty, grow the digital audience and monitor and listen to what is being said through the digital engagement cycle.”

It’s believed to be the second time that a collegiate program has painted a hashtag on its football field. The other instance was a Mississippi State football game against Mississippi last fall when the Bulldogs painted #HAILSTATE in one end zone.

The Michigan Athletic Department already has the Michigan Athletic Ticket Office Twitter account, @umichtix and MGoBlue.com painted into the court in front of both benches at Crisler Center. In addition, U-M promotes its social media platforms — Twitter and Facebook — on the video boards at Michigan Stadium, Crisler Center and Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan Athletics will introduce a “Tweet Board” for the Mott Spring Game presented by PNC Bank that will showcase tweets from fans throughout the Victors Classic alumni flag football game and the Mott Spring Game. Michigan Stadium video boards will highlight the #GOBLUE hashtag throughout both games by including a dedicated #GOBLUE bug and call-to-action asking fans to tweet and use hashtag #GOBLUE. Michigan, in real time, will monitor and approve fan tweets in order to showcase on the “Tweet Board.”

“When a brand ‘gets it’, they stand out from the competition,” said Kathleen Hessert, founder and president of Buzz Manager, Inc., the company Michigan is partnering with to provide a social media audit of the #GOBLUE hashtag. “Michigan combines the best of iconic tradition with a view to the future. Their use of digital and social media is driven by clear business objectives. Michigan is committed to being in the middle of the public’s passionate conversation about sports and, by listening deeply to their fans, they also earn the right to lead.”
